Citizen Lobbying Program
what if you could change the law?
Our State Legislative Program is the perfect place to start.
What are the details?
Program participants learn about the legislative process, op-ed writing, public speaking, testifying, and networking in Utah politics. Each cohort works with a local non-profit on specific legislative priorities and tracking bills. Girls can lobby for or against any bill, we just want them to be talking about it! Past nonprofit partners have included the Heal Utah, YWCA, Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault (UCASA), and the Utah League of Women Voters.
Who can participate?
High school girls and gender non-conforming leaders are divided into issue-based cohorts. A cohort consists of ten girls and two trained, college-aged woman facilitators.
When do cohorts meet?
Cohorts meet once a week during the legislative session, from January to March. COVID-19 restrictions permitting, Girls Lobby hosts an opening and closing social at the Capitol.
This program can be completed at any time during high school. Students can participate for more than one year. After students have participated for at least one year, they have the opportunity to return as a co-teacher for a new cohort or as a club leader at their high school.
